TMJ Disorder
Bruxism is a habit of grinding or clenching the teeth. There are many symptoms that are characteristic of clenching or grinding and they include the following:
- Headache
- Sore Jaw
- Frequent Toothaches
- Facial Pain
- Worn or Fractured Enamel
- Loose Teeth
- Earache
- Insomnia
The causes of bruxism are not certain, but it can be developed at any age. Some causative factors for bruxism include stress, sleep disorders, an abnormal bite (malocclusion), and crooked or missing teeth.
Treatment of Bruxism
The treatment of bruxism depends on its cause. If your clenching and/or grinding is a result of stress, Dr. Vold may recommend relaxation techniques such as reading, or listening to quiet music.
Dr. Vold may also recommend wearing an occlusal appliance during sleep or stressful situations. These appliances allow the jaw to slide into the most relaxed position without interference from the bite. It also prevents your teeth from wearing against one another.
